Temples, Traffic and Tasty Dogs: A Few Days in the life of Cambodia

Tasty Dog in the Kingdom: This Cambodian Life #71.  On a bit of a ramble this evening, Delilah goes on about her speech with a Minister (and this would be one of those referred to as “Your Excellency” , after which she was late to a very early lunch, then you hear the on the edge of your seat story of how she scratched her eye watering her plants (try to stay away for that).  And after that, she rounds off the episode of her trip to the Buddhist Wonderland of Oudong, where you wander up and down steps on top of a mountain, check out the stupas and then get your fortune told for $2.50.

The opening and closing music is from Tep Mari, called Saa Thoukar, from Cambodia Living Arts with their 2004 Cambodia Masters Performing Project collection.  A thought it was a nice plinka plinka to go with the Buddhist Wonderland.

Tasty Dog in the Kingdom: This Cambodian Life #68.  Delilah ponders if her time in Cambodia is done.  So she takes a trip to neighboring Lao and rediscovers the joy of silence, cleanliness and good lighting in the UNESCO heritage city of Luang Prubang.  Then returning to Cambodia, she once again feels that connection to the Kingdom – with its chaos, dirt and noise, it’s still home.

Ros Sereysothea sings If You Wish to Love Me from Cambodia Rocks, Vol 2.  Because nothing is more loveable about Cambodia than its 60s rock stars.

Tasty Dog in the Kingdom: This Cambodian Life #62.  Delilah rambles on a bit about happier subjects covering the latest adventure, a motorbike trip to Mondulkiri.  You can hear what those holes are on the hill and where you can stay and shower outside.  A very exciting trip, including waterfalls, narrowly avoiding an international incident (at least in my mind!), a covert photograph of the Vietnam border, some beautiful and remote roads and a welding experience at a local mechanic’s.

The music is Tep Mari’s Saa Thoukar, from the archives of Cambodia Living Arts.

TD-TV #8.  So what exactly is a bamboo train and what does one see on a bamboo train ride?  Here’s your answer, straight from the rice fields of Kampot to your computer.  So take a ride.

Tasty Dog TV #5.  A trip to the temples.  With Delilah as your untutored tour guide, she takes a spin through four levels of the Bayon, starting at the top, where the 150+ carved faces of Jayavarman VII (aka J-7) stare over groups of tourists, and ending up at the bottom to try to get some perspective, after a few stops in the middle levels to see some of the centuries old carvings that adorn the walls.

Tasty Dog in the Kingdom: This Cambodian Life #29.  Delilah recounts her motorbike trip to Pailin, former Khmer Rouge stronghold, which included a stop in Battambang, as well as a huge number of stops for fixing the motorbike and asking for directions.  She perhaps includes a bit too much of the motorbike health issues but it was rather, oh, consuming for those 3 days.  But you also get a bit about mines, scenery, road conditions (again, not terribly interesting for the listener but consuming!), maps and directions and what hell looks like on top of a mountain in Pailin.

The opening music is another gem from Sen Sisamuth and Pbain Roan, singing tra jiek jet bomnong.  It’s about LOVE, and something about keeping a cool heart when it comes to anger and jealousy.  (yes, I had someone else tell me what the song was about!).  But note the guitar solo at the beginning.  Cool, huh?

Tasty Dog TV #4:  Welcome to Battambang, a lovely laidback city in the middle of Cambodia’s ricebowl along the Sangkae River.  Get a sample of Cambodia’s second largest city (without the overwhelming influence of mass tourism that is undeniably Siem Reap) and take a ride with Delilah as she drives along the riverfront.  See some cool architecture (oh, my favorite), as well as the ubiquitous banks and cell phone shops.

Tasty Dog in the Kingdom; This Cambodian Life #21.  Delilah Marie gives some reviews and news about Krong Kep where she visited for Christmas.  But first she tells you about the bright Christmas lights in Phnom Penh, and the dust mask that keeps dust out of your mouth and nose when you are on a moto.  Some guesthouses are recommended (though she takes no blame for the very LOUD family of Korean tourists who took a lot of pictures and trotted out both Grandmas for various poses), some food is reviewed (and in Kep, it’s fish and crab, right from the ocean).

The opening music is the title song from an album called  Svay Jet, which probably means welcome to my heart or something mushy like that by Choeun Vanna.  I think it’s another oldie but goodie, about love.  Do you see a theme here?

Tasty Dog in the Kingdom: This Cambodian Life, #5.  Delilah Marie is on vacation and visiting the U.S. of A.  Find out what Indiana is watching out for (and it’s not a Tastydog), what she likes most about visiting her homeland, what is just plain strange and what activities one does when camping as Tasty Dog in New Hampshire.  And with all intents of doing so, she gets lazy and has one too many beers and doesn’t tape the Savage Elders, Moo and Broo, over the campfire.

The opening music is our old heartthrob favorite, Sen Sisamok in a duet with Pbain Nai (spelling is definitely incorrect) off the $2 album, The Best of Cambodian Oldies Vol 8 (8!!).  It is old, but is it the best?  You decide.

Tasty Dog in the Kingdom:  This Cambodian Life, #3.  Delilah Marie recounts the glories of a Sunday in Siem Reap, how to go on a date in Cambodia and the perils of stopping the motorbike when you are unaccompanied by a mechanic (which relates to the boring story of why a kickstart is preferred).

The opening music is a famous Cambodian oldie, sung by heartthrob Sen Sisamok (sigh) about the love he feels for the province of Koh Kong.
